“Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” Glida Radner

Traveling is an exciting and enriching experience that allows you to explore new places, meet new people, and gain new perspectives. For many of us, navigating new places and environments can be challenging, but imagine traveling as a blind person. It is not just a matter of finding your way around unfamiliar surroundings, but it's also about overcoming the obstacles of misconceptions and stigmas that come with blindness.

However, despite these challenges, traveling as a blind person can also be a rewarding experience. By embracing ambiguity and being open to new experiences, breaking down barriers and expanding their horizons. Here are some tips for those who wish to do the same.

Research and plan ahead: Before embarking on your trip, research your destination and make a plan. Find out about accessibility and transportation options, such as audio descriptions for monuments, braille signage, and accessible taxis. Familiarize yourself with the local culture and customs, and if necessary, learn a few key phrases in the local language.

Find a trustworthy travel companion: Traveling with a trusted friend or guide can be helpful for navigating unfamiliar places. They can assist with orientation and provide a sense of security. You may also consider hiring a professional guide, who can provide you with personalized support and help you make the most of your trip.

Embrace Technology: Technology can be a valuable tool for blind travelers. Apps like VoiceOver provide audio descriptions of your surroundings, while GPS apps like BlindSquare and ARIA can help you navigate unfamiliar areas. There are also audio-described tour guides and audio books available for many popular tourist destinations.

Talk to the Locals: Getting in touch with local communities can provide you with a deeper understanding of the place you're visiting. This can also provide you with valuable insights and tips that can help you navigate your travels more easily.

Embrace new experiences: Traveling as a blind person can be a great opportunity to try new things and experience the world in new ways. Embrace the ambiguity and be open to new experiences. This can help you gain new perspectives and make lasting memories. You may even make some new friends.

Confidence is key: It's important to be proactive and self-advocating when traveling as a blind person. This means being confident and at times assertive about your needs and speaking up if you encounter any barriers or obstacles. Remember, you are entitled to equal access and accommodations, and it's important to advocate for yourself to ensure a successful and enjoyable trip.

Keep in mind, traveling as a blind person is a unique and rewarding experience. With proper preparation, the right attitude, and a willingness to embrace ambiguity, you can overcome the challenges and make the most of your travels. So don't let your blindness hold you back, embrace the uncertainty and go explore the world!
